Money, Meaning, and the Decisions We Make: How Our Experiences, Values, and Relationships Shape Financial Decisions

  • Virtual Event (registration is required) (map)

We all have a relationship with money, but few of us consider where that story began. Our experiences, beliefs, emotions, relationships, and values shape how we earn, spend, save, give, and invest, often without us realizing it.

These influences don't stop at individual choices. They show up in conversations between advisors and clients, in family decisions about wealth and giving, and in foundation and endowment boardrooms where individuals are collectively entrusted with institutional assets. They also shape how we approach impact: whether we're willing to move from grants to investments, how risky a community or place-based deal feels, and how a board weighs mission alongside returns. Even when we share a goal, our different experiences can lead us to see risk, opportunity, and responsibility very differently.

Join Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist Moraya Seeger DeGeare of Calibrate, Michael O'Bryan of humanature, and Kate Duffy of Bryn Mawr Trust for a conversation about the human side of financial decision-making. We'll explore the stories and patterns that shape how we relate to money, how emotions and relationships influence our choices, and what it takes to make financial decisions that are more intentional and aligned with what most matters to us.

Whether you're an individual investor, part of a family making decisions about wealth, an investment advisor or financial professional working with clients, or a board member helping steward institutional assets, this conversation will offer new ways to think about how we make decisions about money… and how we might make those decisions more thoughtfully, together.

Curious about your own money story? Take the free Calibrate assessment here before the session on November 5 to see how your decision style, values, and blindspots show up in your financial choices. Moraya will share anonymized, aggregate insights from attendees' results during the panel.
